Sharing my top 7 tips to help detoxify your home from harsh chemicals and toxins!

7 ways to detoxify your home.

Hey Friends!

Is it cool if we switch things up today?! Food is such a huge part of my life (clearly 😉) and how I try to stay healthy. I don’t talk about it much, but I’m equally as passionate about ways in which I maintain a more natural approach to my every day life.

There isn’t a lot we can control in life, but I do believe taking hold of the things we can control and making mindful changes in our everyday life can dramatically affect our health in a positive way. Which is why I decided to make some of these lifestyle changes. Some are easy changes that you can make today and others take a little bit of time but are well worth it!

What does detoxing your home look like? I’m glad you asked! For Drew and I, this meant removing products that contain harsh chemicals. It also meant taking a more natural approach to the things we have in our house, and the way we do life so that our home can be cleaner and our lifestyles healthier.

Today, I’m so happy to be partnering with Berkey Filters to bring you this post!

Shall we?!

#1 Berkey Water Purifier

Can I just say I am so happy to kiss bottled and tap water goodbye forever?! This filter is easily one of my top kitchen items because of that reason.

This was also one of the last steps I took toward cleaning out our home (it honestly should’ve been the first step). After reading several articles on how dangerous tap water can be, and how most filters don’t even remove all the chemicals hiding in our water, I decided we needed to chuck our cheap water filter and make some changes.

I have several friends who own a Berkey and RAVED about their products – and after doing lots of research and now owning one for myself I can completely see why!

Drinking not just filtered but purified water has become so important to Drew and I and we couldn’t LOVE this product more for all that it does.

Why we LOVE Berkey

Unlike cheap filters that barely remove contaminants – Berkey products purify water. Which means it takes out 99% of chemicals, viruses, and bacteria (this ain’t normal news for your typical water filter). It also is made of stainless-steel and looks so sleek and beautiful on your counter top!

Travel with it!

This is the Travel Berkey – which means you can pack it up and bring it with you anywhere. This has become our “must-have” for road trips! We have taken this filter to Zion national park, Sequoia, and just recently to Yosemite. It gives us such peace of mind knowing we have clean water with us wherever we go! I’m seriously obsessed with this filter.

#2 Shoes Off At the Door

Some people who visit us may think I’m cray cray, but when Drew and I first decided to start making our home a cleaner place, this was the FIRST step we took. I get so grossed out thinking about all the things my shoes have walked on/around and then bringing those germs into my home. This is especially important living in an urban area. Yoiikes.

We also wipe our dogs feet when we take him out and steam our floors every 2-3 days.

This is such a simple habit to try and implement no matter what. 🙂

My Favorite Steamer

Easiest way to clean your floors

I use this puppy every other day! It uses hot steamed water to kill germs and clean up your floors with 2 washable clothes. It is the quickest way to clean your floors and has the EASIEST clean up. It takes me usually 15-20 minutes to do and leaves my whole house feeling so clean!

#3 Natural Make-Up + Skin Care

Some of my favorite natural skin care products

This was huge for me – and definitely took the most time to do. I think whatever we put on our skin should be top priority! For years the cosmetic industry has used ingredients that have not been regulated by the FDA. This is a no-go for me and my skin.

Make-up is a challenge to change because you want the natural stuff to work just as good and most of the time it doesn’t! BUT, after about 2 years of searching and trying out different brands I (finally) found make-up that works for me, lasts long, and has no aluminums, parabens, or other harmful chemicals.

I’ve had a lot of luck in Whole Foods make-up department and have discovered brands like Mineral Fusion, Cocokind, and Pacifica. And believe it or not these natural brands are less expensive than the make-up I was buying at popular make-up stores!

Mineral Fusion: I use this brand for my concealer and highlighter.

Pacifica: I use the mineral bronzer and blush from this brand and love them both!

Honest Beauty: I finally found a clean mascara that works GREAT. It comes with a primer and makes your lashes super long and wispy.

Cocokind skin care: I don’t like a ton of stuff on my skin. I keep things simple and really minimal when it comes to skin care. I love the products by Cocokind. I use their chlorophyll face mask every night (LOVE IT), brow balm for my brows and eyelashes, and chia facial oil for a night time moisturizer.

My homemade face treatment: Whenever I have an unwanted blemish on my face I make a cocktail of raw honey and a pinch of turmeric – leave it on my face for 15 minutes, rinse, and the next day my face is completely clear! Works like a charm.

#4 Non-Toxic Household Products

When it comes to laundry, cleaning, and everyday hygiene products we make sure they consist of all-natural, plant-based ingredients.

We try to avoid chemicals such as aluminum, parabens, synthetic colors, fragrance, and sulfates.

Brands we love: Meyer’s Clean Day (hand soap, cleaning spray, dish soap, and laundry), and Everyone For Every Body (body wash, lotion, hand soap), and Seventh Generation laundry detergent.

#5 Keep Plants In Every Room

Plants sitting by a window with a brown table and lamp next to them.

Growing up, my mom, who is a self-proclaimed expert in gardening, loved putting plants in many rooms of our house. We even had two big sunrooms that were beautifully decorated with all kinds of different greenery.

Because of this, I try to make an effort to keep plants all throughout our home because not only do they look nice – but most plants help clean the air naturally from germs and toxins.

I recommend keeping at least one plant (big or small) in every room to help clean and improve the quality of the air in your home. Now fingers crossed we can KEEP the plants alive! 😉

Here are some recommendations for the best air purifying plants!

#6 Natural Scents

Hands holding a perfume roller over a bathroom kitchen counter.

Perfume: I try to limit the amount of times I use perfumes that are filled with heavy fragrance. For a fresh every day scent my mom and I both use Pacifica roller perfumes. They’re made with essential oils, smell so so lovely, and are cruelty free+ vegan! My mom uses the lilac roller (LOVE) and I’m obsessed with the coconut nectar and ruby guava scent!

Candles: I no longer burn candles with fake fragrance. I love burning soy candles that use natural essential oils for scent. We also regularly diffuse citrus essential oils – these specific scents are great for cleaning/purifying the air quality in your home!

#7 Reduce Plastic Use

This is a step I’m still continuing to grow in since plastic is practically everywhere. This is great for environmental reasons but I mostly made this decision for personal health reasons. National Geographic cited that the average person consumes thousands of bits of plastic through food and drink consumption. That is quite the eye-opener, huh?

Plastic is everywhere with food products so it can be tricky. Start small and make changes as you go – each simple change makes a difference for your health! Here’s plastic products we have eliminated from our home:

  • plastic water bottles: we use our Berkey filter with reusable bottles or if we are in a bind we purchase “Just Water” bottles made from plant-based ingredients.
  • ziplock bags + plastic wrap + plastic food containers: all three of these we replaced with glass food storage containers.
  • food product containers: this is a hard one. But whenever I can I try to purchase spices, seasonings, and anything I can in glass instead of plastic if the option is available.

And there you have it! These are simple steps I’ve taken over time to detox my home and lifestyle. I always suggest starting small – even changing one of these things can make a positive improvement in your life and home.

I hope this post leaves you inspired! If you have any ways in which you’ve cleaned out your home and made mindful changes for your health – share them! I’d love to hear from you.

Now on to making more recipes!

xoxo Bethany
