This colorful salsa is made with black beans, chopped tomatoes, creamy avocado, and jalapeno for some spice. It has all the flavors of a typical salsa, but with a little more veggies involved and some plant protein to keep things satisfying.

It’s easy to make, and is perfect for chip dipping or adding as a garnish to compliment your favorite meal! No matter what way you choose to serve it, I’m certain you’ll love every bite.

Ingredients – What You Need

You’ll need 9 ingredients to make this salsa! See below for the full list and ingredients tips.

Ingredients for black bean salsa arranged on a brown wooden cutting board.

Tomatoes: I recommend using cherry tomatoes because they’re smaller and perfect for salsa.
Black beans: use canned/cooked black beans.
Avocado: ripe avocado will add a creaminess and balances the heat from the pepper.
Lime: the juice will add citrusy flavor.
Jalapeno: for a little kick of heat – nothing too intense.
Red onion: adds lots of flavor!
Cilantro: use fresh cilantro, not dried, for flavor.
Garlic powder: powder is quicker than chopping fresh garlic, but you can also use minced fresh garlic too.
Cumin: this seasoning will add the salsa flavor we want!

Then assemble all the vegetables in a bowl with black beans, chopped cilantro, spices, and a sprinkle of salt to taste. Squeeze lime juice over top before mixing together! Taste then serve.

Tips for Success & FAQs

Additional vegetables to add – you can also add veggies like corn (regular, fire-roasted, or grilled), bell pepper, chopped spinach, or shallots instead of red onion.

Adjust the heat – if you like spicer salsa you can add more jalapeno pepper and even throw in some of the seeds (that’s where a lot of the spice is!).

Can I make this ahead of time? – Yes, this recipe can be prepared and stored in the refrigerator for several hours before serving.

How long does it keep? This salsa should keep for 3 days stored in the fridge in an airtight container.
